The idea for the Riley Creek School Snack Pack Program was conceived in 2007.
The program began providing food packs to children who qualified for free and reduced cost meals that were meant to help curb hunger over the weekend when meals were not available.
Originally, the program was designed to serve children in grades K-3. The need to expand the program became quickly evident and soon the RCS Snack Pack Program was serving all of the qualified children in grades K-8. This often meant providing 200 - 220 Snack Packs per week.
When researching possible funding sources, Snack Pack volunteers learned of an Oregon State program that was doing substantially the same work. They met with representatives of the group only to learn that any monies raised would need to be turned over, and in return, the organization could provide 50 Snack Packs per week for Gold Beach. The RCS Snack Pack Program turned down the opportunity to be involved and continued to raise funds privately in order to serve more children.
When possible, additional Snack Packs are provided to principals at both Riley Creek and Gold Beach High to distribute as need arises.
In spring of 2015, recognizing that donations were dropping off and founding members were unable to continue active participation for a myriad number of health and personal reasons, a call for help went out to the community to keep RCS Snack Pack alive.
In June of 2015 RCS Snack Pack began reorganizing and has since added 10 new active members to its supporter roster. Over the course of the summer the group was able to reinstate a weekly ad in the Curry County Reporter which has brought in close to $1000 in donations. RCS Snack Pack had a presence at the 4-H Commotion by the Ocean and brought in $50 in donations as well as getting its new school bus logo out in front of the public. They also had a presence in the Curry County Fair parade and earned a 3rd place ribbon for their entry. Their annual Ice Cream Sundae Social over Labor Day weekend brought in over $800 in donations, double its previous earnings.
At this time, RCS Snack Pack will have a presence at the Brew and Art Fest, The Bridge Bash, and the Holiday Bazaar. 
The group now meets regularly on the second Thursday of the month downstairs at the County Annex Building Community Room.
RCS Snack Pack Program is devoted to providing nutritious food to those children in need in the Gold Beach area, serving under the mantra: “because no child should go hungry.”
